WASHINGTON — Fewer people are claiming unemployment benefits — but still too many to signal that the economy is close to gaining jobs.
First-time claims for jobless benefits dropped last week to a seasonally adjusted 502,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the fewest claims since the week ending Jan. 3, and below economists' estimates.
Claims would have to fall to the high 400s to indi…

WASHINGTON — Unemployment likely will remain high for the next several years because the economic recovery won’t be strong enough to spur robust hiring, Federal Reserve officials warned today.
The cautionary note struck by the presidents of regional Fed banks in San Francisco and Atlanta were the first public remarks of Fed officials since the government reported last week that the nation’s jobless rate bolted to 10.2 percent in October. It marked…

I’m not saying everybody should go hear financial guru Suze Orman at the Texas Conference for Women on Thursday.
But you'll enjoy her shtick if you do decide to go.
Her self-confidence, for starters, is breathtaking.
And her advice on financial planning — the very subject that put most people to sleep 10 years ago but is key to surviving the recession today — is straight from the school of hard knocks. In fact, it was terrible financial ad…

The unemployment rate has hit double digits for the first time since 1983 — and is likely to go higher.
The 10.2 percent jobless rate for October shows how weak the economy remains even though it is growing. Rising unemployment also could threaten the recovery if it saps consumers' confidence and makes them more cautious about spending as the holiday season approaches.
Nearly 16 million people can't find jobs even though the worst recession since the Gre…

WASHINGTON — Recognizing that a weak economy still needs a government boost, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to provide the jobless with up to 20 weeks in additional unemployment benefits and expand a first-time homebuyer tax credit to include a far larger pool of people entering the dormant housing market.
The $24 billion bill, passed 98-0, also…

A survey may ease some concerns about unemployment and its effect on consumer spending. Forecasters say more employers appear willing to hire in the coming months. The latest quarterly survey from the National Association for Business Economics indicates that unemployment should moderate. It also signals an improved hiring outlook over the next six months, which may help alleviate worries that the nation's unemployment rate will continue to jump and constrict consumer spending, the main driver o…
